Because it is so durable, it lasts a long time. This makes it a very valuable timber for builders and makers.

There are three main species of genuine mahogany. The first is Honduran mahogany, also called big-leaf mahogany. This is the most common kind found today. It is the only genuine species grown for wood.

The second is West Indian or Cuban mahogany. This tree grows in the Caribbean and southern Florida. The third is the Pacific Coast mahogany. This tree is often small and has a twisted shape.

People have traded mahogany for hundreds of years. The trade likely started as early as the 16th century. Europeans first noticed the wood during Spanish colonization. In the 1700s, it became even more popular. This happened because the British Parliament removed taxes on certain timbers. This change helped more wood move to Europe and North America.

Many places are connected to these trees. Mahogany is the national tree of Belize and the Dominican Republic. Today, Peru is the largest exporter of this wood. The United States is the leading importer.

In the year 2000, about 57,000 trees were harvested for the U.S. furniture trade. Some species are now protected by a group called CITES. This group helps stop illegal logging and manages how the wood is sold.

Sometimes, you might hear names like "African mahogany." These are not the same as genuine mahogany. They come from different tree families in Africa and Madagascar. In the United States, the law says these must have a second name. You cannot just call them "mahogany" alone. This helps people know exactly what kind of wood they are buying.
