People use it to build the frames of houses. It also makes floors, window frames, and wall panels. In the United States and Canada, people call milled boards lumber. They use the word timber for standing or fallen trees.

In Britain and Ireland, people use the word timber for both. This wood is a very important part of building our world.

Making lumber involves several steps to turn a log into a board.

One common way is using a rip saw. This method is very efficient for many types of wood. Workers can use plain sawing to cut through a log. They can also use quarter sawing to cut the wood differently. This makes the annual rings of the tree stand in a certain way. Some wood is even re-sawed by splitting a thick board into thinner pieces.

Humans have been processing wood for a very long time.

In 1420, settlers in Madeira cleared large forests to grow crops. They used sawmills to turn those trees into planks for ships. A big change happened in 1593 with a man named Cornelis Corneliszoon. He was a Dutch windmill owner from Uitgeest. He invented the first wind-powered sawmill. This invention made cutting logs thirty times faster than doing it by hand.

Most lumber used today comes from softwoods.

These come from trees like pine, fir, and spruce. In fact, about 80% of all lumber is softwood. Hardwoods are often used for things like cabinets or fine furniture. Builders use dimensional lumber, which comes in standard sizes. A common size is a 2x4 board. In North America, these boards are often between 8 and 12 feet long. Some boards can be even longer, like one in Poland.

It is important that lumber is strong and safe for buildings.

Because wood can have knots or different grains, it varies in strength. To help, groups like the American Lumber Standard Committee set rules. These rules help make sure the wood is the right size and quality. In Canada, the National Lumber Grades Authority maintains similar rules. Even plastic lumber is made now from recycled materials. This helps people find new ways to use wood products.
