Engineered wood is a special kind of man-made wood.

It is not just a single piece from a tree. Instead, it is made by joining many smaller wood parts together. People use things like strands, fibers, or thin sheets called veneers. These parts are fixed together using adhesives, which is a fancy word for glue. This way of making wood creates a material that is very predictable. Builders can trust it to be strong and even in its shape.

There are many ways to make these products. For plywood, workers take thin sheets of wood called veneers. They glue them together under heat and pressure. They also turn the grain direction of each layer. This is called cross-orienting, and it makes the panel very stiff. For oriented strand board, or OSB, they use rectangular wood strands. These strands are laid into mats and bonded with heat-cured glue. The outermost layers often have strands pointing in the strongest direction.

People have used different types of engineered wood for a long time. Plywood is often called the original engineered wood product. Some types of mass timber have existed for over one hundred years. Mass timber is a group of large wood parts used for big buildings. It has become much more popular since the year 2012. This is because people want to build in ways that are more sustainable. They also like that these parts can be made in a factory before they reach the building site.

Different products serve different jobs in our world. Particle board is made from wood chips or even sawdust. It is often used for furniture that is not meant to hold huge weight. Some mass timber products can even replace steel or concrete. Cross-laminated timber, or CLT, is a newer type of multi-layered panel. In 2021, new building codes allowed mass timber to be used for tall buildings. These buildings can be as high as 18 stories!

You can see engineered wood in many places every day. It is used to make flat-pack furniture that is easy to carry. It is also used for floor and roof parts called I-joists. By the year 2004, about 81% of wood light framed floors used these I-joists. Even some products use things that are not wood at all. They might use bamboo or fibers from wheat and rice straw. This shows how many clever ways we have to use plants to build our homes.
