Mahir Çayan was a famous political thinker in Turkey. He was born in Samsun in 1946. His family later moved to Istanbul. He went to Haydarpaşa High School there. Later, he went to Ankara University. He studied at the Faculty of Political Science. He was a scholarship student for two years. During this time, he became very active in student politics.

Çayan had many different political ideas. He first joined the Workers' Party of Turkey. Later, he joined a movement called the National Democratic Revolution. He eventually broke away from the leaders of that group. He disagreed with how they wanted to change the country. He also disagreed with how they viewed the military. Çayan was a Marxist-Leninist who admired leaders like Che Guevara. He liked how guerrilla groups worked in Latin America. He wanted to create a new strategy for his own country.

In 1970, Çayan helped lead a student group called Dev-Genç. He was seen as a very bright theorist. His group eventually split from the older political movements. They published a journal called Kurtuluş, which means Liberation. After that, they formed a group called the THKP-C. This group wanted to use armed struggle to change Turkey. Çayan wrote pamphlets about these ideas. One of his famous works was called Kesintisiz Devrim. This title means Uninterrupted Revolution.

Life became very difficult in 1971. The military took control of the Turkish government. This was called a military memorandum. Because of this, Çayan had to live in hiding. He and his group were part of a hard struggle. In 1972, they went to a village called Kızıldere. This village is in the Tokat Province. They were staying in a country house there. They had also taken three technicians from a radar station. They wanted to protect other activists from being punished.

Things ended sadly in the village of Kızıldere. Soldiers found the group and surrounded the house. A fight broke out between the soldiers and the militants. Mahir Çayan died in this fight on March 30, 1972. Nine of his comrades also died that day. Only one person from the group, Ertuğrul Kürkçü, survived. Çayan's ideas about how power works are still studied. He believed that foreign influence created an artificial balance in Turkey. He wanted to break that balance through revolution.
