Maglev

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Maglev is a special way to move people using magnets. The name comes from magnetic levitation, which means the train floats.

Most trains use wheels to roll on metal tracks. Maglev trains use electromagnets to lift the train up instead. This removes rolling resistance, which is the friction from wheels touching a track.

Because they float, these trains can reach much higher top speeds. They can also speed up and slow down very quickly. They are often quieter than regular trains because nothing is rubbing together.

There are two main ways a maglev train can float. The first way is called electromagnetic suspension, or EMS.

The second way is called electrodynamic suspension, or EDS.

To move forward, these trains usually use a linear motor. A linear motor is a tool that provides power to push the train along the path. While levitation uses energy, it is usually not the biggest part of the power used. At very high speeds, the biggest energy cost comes from overcoming drag. Drag is the air pushing against the train as it moves fast.

People have been studying magnetic travel for a long time. In 1912, Émile Bachelet showed a model train in New York.

It used magnets to lift and move the train. In the 1940s, Eric Laithwaite worked on a special motor called a linear induction motor.

He later discovered a "magnetic river" arrangement of magnets. This allowed one motor to provide both lift and forward thrust. The first commercial maglev system opened in 1984 near Birmingham, England.

Maglev trains have set many amazing speed records. The Japanese L0 Series maglev set a huge record in 2015.

Before that, the Shanghai maglev held a record for passenger trains.

That train uses German Transrapid technology. It connects the Pudong International Airport to the outskirts of central Pudong. At its fastest, it covered its distance in just over 8 minutes. Currently, there are only seven operational maglev trains in the world. Four are in China, two are in South Korea, and one is in Japan.

New maglev paths are being built right now. In China, a line is being built between Changsha and Liuyang.

This is in the Hunan Province. In Japan, workers are building the Chūō Shinkansen.

This line will connect Tokyo and Nagoya. It might also connect to Osaka in the future. Building these systems is a hard job because they are expensive. They also cannot use the same tracks as regular trains. Even so, these floating trains are a very exciting way to travel.
