Maglev trains are a special way to travel. The word maglev comes from magnetic levitation. This means the train floats in the air.

Most trains use wheels to roll on tracks. Maglev trains use electromagnets to lift up. This helps them avoid rolling resistance. Rolling resistance is the friction from wheels touching a track.

Because they float, these trains can go very fast. They can also speed up and slow down quickly. They are quieter than regular trains.

There are two main ways to make them float. One way is electromagnetic suspension, or EMS. The other way is electrodynamic suspension, or EDS.

A linear motor provides the power to move the train forward. Today, there are only seven maglev trains working in the world. Four are in China. Two are in South Korea. One is in Japan.

Building these trains is very expensive. They also use a lot of power at high speeds. Even so, new lines are being built in China and Japan.
