Many people call them bullet trains. This name comes from how fast they go. It also comes from the shape of the first trains.

These trains help people travel between big cities. The first line, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, opened in 1964. It connects Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, and Ōsaka. This line is very busy. It carried 161 million passengers in 2023.

The Shinkansen uses special tracks. These tracks are wider than old tracks in Japan. This is called standard gauge. Using wider tracks helps the trains go fast. The tracks also stay separate from roads. This keeps the trains on time. Most tracks do not cross other lines. This means slow trains do not get in the way. New lines are still being built. One new maglev line is under construction. A maglev uses magnets to move. It might open by the end of fiscal year 2038.
