A long trail of gas floats in space. This is the Magellanic Stream.

It follows two small star groups. These are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The stream is made of high-velocity clouds. This means the gas moves very fast.

Scientists first saw these gas clouds in 1965. In 1974, they found the link to the Clouds. The stream is very long. It stretches 180 degrees across the sky. It may be 600,000 light-years long.

How did the stream form? One idea uses tidal forces. This is a pull from gravity. The gravity of the Clouds pulls on the gas. Another idea uses ram pressure stripping. This happens when gas is pushed away.

Most gas comes from the Small Magellanic Cloud. It has less mass. This makes it easy for gravity to pull its gas away. The Large Cloud is bigger. It keeps more of its gas. A young group of stars lives in the leading arm. This part is called the Leading Arm. It is 90,000 light-years away from us.
