Magellanic spiral

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A Magellanic spiral is a special kind of galaxy. Most spiral galaxies have many arms that curve out. These galaxies are different because they have only one spiral arm.

They are usually small dwarf galaxies. These galaxies sit between dwarf spiral galaxies and irregular galaxies. You can find them near much larger spiral galaxies. Our own Milky Way is a large spiral galaxy.

These galaxies have a very specific way they are built. They have a layered structure made of stars.

Most main sequence stars live inside the single spiral arm. Main sequence stars are common stars. Other stars called supergiants are found in a different place. These huge stars cluster in a thick bar. This bar sits across the middle of the galaxy.

A scientist named Gerard de Vaucouleurs helped us understand them. He changed how we classify or group galaxies. He introduced the Magellanic spiral name. He also created the name for Magellanic irregular galaxies. This happened when he updated the Hubble classification system. This system helps scientists organize the many types of galaxies. His work helps us see how galaxies relate to each other.

Scientists use different labels for these galaxies. The type Sm is the main group name. Some are called SBm if they have a bar. Others are called SAm if they have no bar. Some are SABm if they are in between.

The Large Magellanic Cloud is the main example. It is an SBm galaxy. The Small Magellanic Cloud is another one. Other barred examples include NGC 1311 and NGC 55. Unbarred examples are NGC 5204 and NGC 2552.

You can think of these galaxies as a middle ground. They are not quite regular spirals. They are also not quite irregular galaxies. They are often disrupted and asymmetric. This means they do not have a perfectly even shape. Many of these dwarf galaxies live near big neighbors. The Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud live near us. They show us how small galaxies behave in space.
