Madame d'Aulnoy was a famous French writer. She is best known for her fairy tales. In 1697, she published a book called Les Contes des Fées. This book gave the fairy tale its name. Her stories were very special. One of her tales featured the first "Prince Charming." This character became a very famous idea.

Her stories were different from other tales. They were written in a chatty style. People often read them in salons. A salon was a social gathering in a home. Many rich people and princes went to her home to visit.

Many of her stories had magic animals. These animals were often brides or grooms. The heroes had to finish hard tasks to find love. Some people think she knew these stories from old folk tales. She wrote twelve books in total. These included novels and memoirs. Her writing earned her money to help her three daughters. In England, people sometimes called her "Madame Bunch."
