Madame d'Aulnoy was a famous French writer who changed how we think about stories. She is best known for creating literary fairy tales. In 1697, she published a collection called Les Contes des Fées, which means Fairy Tales. This book actually gave the name to the whole genre of fairy tales. Her stories were very special because they introduced the character Prince Charming. This idea of a perfect prince became famous all over the world.

Her writing style was very unique for her time. Instead of sounding like old legends, her stories felt like a conversation. She wrote them in a way that people could enjoy during salon gatherings. A salon was a social meeting held in a private home. Many important people, like princes and aristocrats, visited her home on rue Saint-Benoît. These gatherings allowed her to share her imaginative worlds with many listeners.

Madame d'Aulnoy had a very busy and sometimes difficult life. She was born in Barneville-la-Bertran in Normandy in September 1652. At age fifteen, her father arranged her marriage to Baron d'Aulnoy. In 1669, her husband was accused of treason, which is a serious crime against a King. The Baron spent three years in the Bastille prison before he was found innocent. During this time, Madame d'Aulnoy had to escape from officers through a window.

Throughout her career, she published twelve different books. These included fairy tale collections like Contes Nouveaux, or New Tales. She also wrote historical novels and travel memoirs about places like Madrid and London. Some of her stories featured animal brides or grooms. These characters often had to face great obstacles to find true happiness. Scholars believe she learned these ideas from old folk tales told by mouth.

Her work left a lasting mark on literature and culture. Even though some people later called her accounts fraudulent, her tales were loved as entertainment. In England, many readers knew her by the name Madame Bunch. She was even elected to the Paduan Accademia dei Ricovrati. There, she was given the name Clio, which is the name of the muse of history. Her writing helped her support her many children throughout her life.
