Fernande Grudet was a famous woman in France.

Most people knew her by her nickname, Madame Claude. She was born on July 6, 1923, in Angers. Her early life is a bit of a mystery. Some stories say she came from a rich family. Other stories say she sold food from a small cart.

One unverified story says she helped the French Resistance during World War II. It even says she was held in a Nazi camp. These stories show how many different lives she might have lived.

Madame Claude became a leader in the 1960s.

She ran a very special group of workers in Paris. This group was a network of call girls. She managed her business from a place in the 16th arrondissement. This is a very expensive part of the city. She was known for being a very good manager. She once said she was better at managing than cooking. Her business was very exclusive and very private.

Her business served many powerful people.

Her clients were often leaders and government workers. She even had names in her address book like John F. Kennedy. She also mentioned the shah of Iran and Gianni Agnelli. Agnelli was the head of a big company called Fiat. Some of her clients were even part of the Mafia. She worked with the police to keep her business safe. This helped her stay protected for many years.

Things began to change for her in 1976.

A judge named Jean-Louis Bruguière wanted to stop her group. The government said she owed 11 million francs in taxes. This was a huge amount of money. To avoid trouble, she moved to Los Angeles. She stayed away from France for a long time. She finally returned to her home country in 1986. She had to serve three months in jail.

Madame Claude's life stayed in the news for a long time.

She tried to start her business again in the 1990s. However, she was sent to Fleury-Mérogis Prison in 1992. Her life was so interesting that people made movies about it. A film called The French Woman came out in 1977. Netflix also made a show about her called Madame Claude. She lived a long life and died in Nice in 2015. Her story is still told in books and songs today.
