It serves as the historic capital of the Westphalia region and acts as a center for a state district. The city is part of the international Euregio region. This large area includes cities like Enschede, Hengelo, Gronau, and Osnabrück. Together, the Euregio contains more than 1,000,000 inhabitants. Today, Münster has a population of approximately 300,000 people.

A large portion of this population consists of students. There are about 61,500 students living in the city. This high number of students gives the city a very lively character.

The geography of Münster is defined by the river Aa.

The city sits just south of where the Aa meets the Ems river. This area is known as the Westphalian Bight. The landscape features the Münsterland, which is filled with farms and small settlements. A mountain ridge called the Münsterländer Kiessandzug crosses the city from north to south. The highest point in the area is the Mühlenberg, which stands 97 metres above sea level. The city center sits at an elevation of 60 metres.

Nearly half of the city's total area is used for agriculture. This results in a low overall population density of about 900 inhabitants per km2. However, the city center is much more crowded, with about 15,000 inhabitants per km2.

Münster's climate is often a topic of local conversation. There is a famous saying that it either rains or the church bells ring.

In reality, the total amount of rainfall is close to the German average. The city simply experiences a high number of rainy days with small amounts of rain. The average temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius. There are approximately 1,500 sun hours per year, which is among the lower fifth of German cities. Winters are generally mild, and snowfall is not a common occurrence. The summer temperatures stay within the typical German average.

The history of Münster began with religious missions. In 793, Charlemagne sent Ludger to evangelize the Münsterland.

Ludger became the first bishop of Münster and founded a school in 797. This school eventually became the Cathedral School, which is the ancestor of the Gymnasium Paulinum. The first cathedral was finished by the year 850. Because of its position at a ford and a crossroads, Münster became an important center for administration and trade. In 1040, Heinrich III became the first Holy Roman Emperor to visit the city. During the Middle Ages, the Prince-Bishopric of Münster was a key member of the Hanseatic League.

Significant political shifts occurred during the 16th century. In 1534, an Anabaptist group led by John of Leiden took control of the city.

They established a democratic, proto-socialistic state they called the "New Jerusalem." This group claimed all property and burned all books except for the Bible. They believed they would purify the world in preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. However, the city was recaptured in 1535. Following the recapture, the Anabaptist leaders were executed. Metal baskets used to display their corpses still hang from the tower of St. Lambert's Church today.

Later, Münster played a vital role in European peace. In 1648, the Treaties of Westphalia were signed here. These treaties ended both the Thirty Years' War and the Eighty Years' War.

The 20th century brought both growth and destruction. Münster became a major city in 1915 after passing 100,000 inhabitants.

During World War II, the city was a major military headquarters for the German Wehrmacht. It was also home to the Oflag VI-D prisoner-of-war camp. The city suffered heavy damage from Allied air raids. By the end of the war, about 63 per cent of the city was destroyed. Specifically, 91 per cent of the Old City was lost.

After the war, the Old City was carefully rebuilt to match its original appearance. This reconstruction helped restore the historic character of the city center.

Modern Münster is recognized globally for its lifestyle and education. It is widely known as the bicycle capital of Germany.

This award recognized it as the most livable city for its size. Today, the city successfully blends its deep historical roots with a modern, student-driven energy.
