Lygodium is a group of about 40 types of ferns. These plants live in warm, tropical lands. You can find them in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Most ferns do not climb. Lygodium is different. Its midrib, or the center part of a leaf, is long and bendy. This part wraps around things to climb up high. This makes each leaf act like a vine. The plant is very tough. It has small buds that stay asleep. If the plant gets hurt, these buds wake up to help it grow back.

In the Philippines, people use these plants. They call them nito. People take the fibers from the plant to weave things. They use them to make traditional hats called salakot.

In some places, these ferns can be a problem. In the southeastern United States, they grow very fast. One type is called the Japanese climbing fern. It can crowd out other plants in forests. This changes the homes for local animals. In swampy areas, some ferns grow so much that they take over everything. They make a monoculture, which is a place where only one kind of plant grows.
