The city is built on high, steep cliffs. These cliffs drop down into deep, narrow valleys. Because the ground is so uneven, the city has many levels. Many bridges and viaducts span the gaps between the hills.

The Council of the European Union even meets in the city for three months every year. This makes the city a very important part of how Europe works. It is a busy place where many people come to work for these large institutions.

Luxembourg City has a very old and strong history. Long ago, people built a small castle called Lucilinburhuc.

In the year 963, a man named Siegfried I acquired this castle. Over many centuries, the city became one of the strongest fortresses in Europe. It was protected by many thick walls and underground tunnels called casemates. Because it was so hard to capture, people called it the 'Gibraltar of the North.' Many different empires, like the Spanish and the French, once controlled the city.

Today, the city is home to 137,696 people.

It is a very diverse place where 160 different nationalities live together. In fact, about 69.5% of the people living there are foreigners. This makes it the place in Luxembourg with the most residents from other countries. In 2024, the IMF ranked the country with the highest GDP per capita in the world. This means the people there have a lot of wealth. The city is also known for being a very safe place to live.

You can see how much the city has changed by looking at its many parts. The old city sits high on the cliffs, while other parts are in the valleys.
