One of the most famous parts of the fortress was the casemates. These are large underground tunnels used for defense. The Spanish began building these tunnels in 1644. Later, the French and Austrians enlarged and improved them. The city was so well-defended that it held out during a long French siege. Eventually, the 1867 Treaty of London required the city to dismantle its fortifications. This process took sixteen years and cost 1.5 million gold francs. The demolition of the walls allowed the city to expand and grow.

In modern times, the city has become a very international place. It has a population of 137,696 inhabitants.
