The history of the region reaches back to the Paleolithic Age, about 35,000 years ago. Later, Celtic tribes settled between the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The Romans eventually invaded the area during the conquest of Gaul. They ruled the region for approximately 450 years. This era was known as the Pax Romana, a period of relative peace. During this time, the local Celts adopted Roman culture and language. This blend created what historians call a Gallo-Roman civilization. Archaeological evidence, such as the Oppidum of Titelberg, proves this history.

Following the Roman era, the Germanic Franks moved into the territory. By AD 406, Rome had abandoned the region. The Franks brought Germanic languages to the area. These languages eventually evolved into the modern Luxembourgish language. In the 7th century, Christianization began to spread. A missionary named Willibrord helped establish the Abbey of Echternach in AD 698. This abbey became a major center of influence in northern Europe. It produced famous works like the Codex Aureus, a book written in gold ink.

Succession crises eventually changed the course of the nation. In 1443, the House of Luxembourg ended due to a lack of male heirs. This led to nearly 400 years of foreign rule. The territory passed through the hands of the Burgundians and the Habsburgs. Under Habsburg rule, Luxembourg was caught in conflicts between Spain and France. The country was partitioned three times, which reduced its size. It was finally restored in 1815 after Napoleon was defeated. It regained full independence in 1867 following the Luxembourg Crisis.
