He also made the Russet Burbank potato.

However, his lack of record-keeping may have been due to the era's difficulties. There was no easy way to legally protect inventions at that time. He also felt his time was better spent in the garden than writing in books.
Burbank passed away on April 11, 1926, due to heart failure. Before his death, he asked his wife, Elizabeth, to ensure his work continued. He suggested that Stark Bro's Nurseries & Orchards Co. was the best organization for his legacy. Elizabeth eventually sold the property and various rights to the Stark company. Much of his experimental farm was later used by the Santa Rosa Junior College. Today, the site is a public park and a free showplace for the city. His many unmarketed experiments, like hybrid roses and different types of plums, remain part of his vast botanical legacy.
