He went to Dunbar High School, which was a place of great opportunity. Later, he studied at Amherst College and McGill University in Canada.

In 1940, Drew helped lead the "Blood for Britain" project. This project sent blood plasma to help soldiers and people in the United Kingdom. He helped collect plasma from almost 15,000 donors. This resulted in over 5,500 vials of plasma being sent overseas. He also worked for the American Red Cross. There, he helped invent bloodmobiles. These were special vehicles used to collect and cool blood while moving.

Drew was a man who stood up for what was right. At that time, some groups tried to separate blood based on race. Drew knew this was not based on science. He resigned from his job to protest these unfair rules.

To understand his impact, one must understand the biology of shock. Shock occurs when the body's blood volume declines rapidly. This can happen due to severe wounds or dehydration. During shock, both blood pressure and body temperature decrease. This leads to a lack of oxygen in the body's tissues and cells. At the time, doctors knew transfusions helped, but they could not move or store blood easily.

This limitation meant transfusions were restricted to the immediate location of the patient.

Drew solved this through his research into blood preservation. He focused on blood plasma, which is the liquid component of blood. His doctoral thesis at Columbia University explored de-liquification, or separating liquid blood from its cells. He discovered that plasma could be preserved for two months longer using this method. When a doctor needs it, the plasma undergoes reconstitution to return to its original state. This discovery allowed blood products to be transported over long distances safely.

Drew’s journey to medical expertise was filled with hard work.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., in a middle-class family. To fund his medical education, he worked as a professor and football coach at Morgan College. He eventually attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada. There, he earned his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery in 1933. He later earned a Doctor of Science in Surgery from Columbia University in 1940.

In 1940, Drew applied his research to the "Blood for Britain" project. This project aimed to provide blood plasma to British soldiers and civilians. As medical director, Drew managed the collection and testing of plasma. He used centrifugation and liquid extraction to ensure the plasma was safe. To prevent contamination, he used air concealment, ultraviolet light, and Merthiolate. The project was a massive success. It involved almost 15,000 donors and produced over 5,500 vials of plasma.

His success led to his role as director of the first American Red Cross Blood Bank in 1941.

In this position, Drew invented "bloodmobiles." These were mobile stations that could collect and refrigerate blood on the move. This increased the number of people who could donate. However, Drew also faced deep injustice. The U.S. Army and Navy initially rejected African-American blood or required it to be stored separately. Drew knew this racial segregation had no scientific foundation. He resigned from the Red Cross in 1942 to protest these unfair policies.

Despite these challenges, Drew's professional achievements were immense. He was the first African American surgeon to serve as an examiner for the American Board of Surgery. In 1944, the NAACP awarded him the Spingarn Medal.

He was also honored with honorary doctorates from Virginia State College and Amherst College. His personal life included his marriage to Minnie Lenore Robbins, with whom he had four children.

Tragically, Drew died in a car accident on April 1, 1950. While driving to a medical clinic in North Carolina, he lost control of his vehicle. Although myths suggest he was denied hospital care due to his race, witnesses stated his injuries were too severe to survive. Today, his legacy is preserved through many institutions. The Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School and various bridges and landmarks bear his name. His scientific breakthroughs continue to protect lives in hospitals everywhere.
