The luna moth is a large moth in North America.

It has lime-green wings and a white, hairy body. Both males and females have eyespots on their wings. These spots may have many colors like blue or red. These spots help trick predators. The moth also has long tails on its back wings. These tails may confuse bats that use echolocation to find food.

Luna moths have a busy life cycle. They start as small, oval eggs on leaves. When they hatch, they become green caterpillars. These caterpillars eat leaves from trees like walnut or birch. They grow through five stages called instars. At the end, the caterpillar makes a silk cocoon on the ground. Inside, it turns into a pupa.

Soon, the adult moth emerges. Its wings are small and wet at first. The moth pumps fluid, called hemolymph, into its wings to make them large.

Adult moths do not have mouths to eat. They use power stored from when they were caterpillars. They live for only seven to ten days.
