The luna moth is a beautiful insect found in North America.

It belongs to a group called giant silk moths. These moths have bright lime-green wings and white, hairy bodies. They are quite large for moths. Most have a wingspan of about 3.5 inches. However, some can grow even larger than that. They are known as "moon moths" because they fly at night. Their appearance is very special. Both males and females have eyespots on their wings. These spots use colors like blue, red, or yellow to trick predators.

The life of a luna moth happens in stages. It starts as a tiny egg on the underside of a leaf. These eggs are about 1.5 millimeters wide. When they hatch, green caterpillars emerge to eat leaves. They eat from trees like walnut, hickory, or birch. The caterpillar grows through five stages called instars. After the fifth stage, the caterpillar moves to the ground. It uses silk to wrap dead leaves around itself to make a cocoon. Inside the cocoon, it becomes a pupa.

After a few weeks, the winged adult finally emerges.

Becoming an adult is a busy process. When the moth first comes out, its wings are small and wet. The moth must pump a fluid called hemolymph into its wings. This fluid works like blood to help the wings expand. It takes about two to three hours for the wings to dry and harden. Once they are ready, the moth can fly. Adult moths do not have mouths to eat food. They must use energy they stored while they were caterpillars. Because of this, they only live for about seven to ten days.

Luna moths have many clever ways to stay safe. The caterpillars can make clicking noises to warn predators. They can also release fluids to make predators go away. The adult moths have long tails on their back wings. Scientists think these tails confuse bats. Bats use a tool called echolocation to find food in the dark. The tails might trick the bat into attacking the wrong spot. In tests, bats hit the tails instead of the moth's body more than half the time. This helps the moth survive.

Humans have studied these moths for a long time. A man named James Petiver first described them in 1700. Later, the famous scientist Carl Linnaeus gave them a new name in 1758. He named them after Luna, the Roman goddess of the moon. Luna moths live in many places. You can find them from Canada down to Florida. They can even be seen in parts of Europe. They are a wonderful part of the natural world to watch and study.
