It sits in the Calabarzon region, south of Manila. The city is the capital of Quezon Province. Even though it is inside the province, Lucena is independent. This means the city governs itself without provincial oversight. It serves as a major hub for many things. People go there for healthcare, education, and business.

The land around the city center has a special shape. Two rivers wrap around the city proper. The Dumacaa River sits on the east side. The Iyam River flows on the west side.

There are also seven other rivers and six creeks nearby. These help drain the water from the land. The city also has a port on Tayabas Bay. Many boats and ferries use this port to travel. They connect Lucena to the Visayas and other places.

Lucena has a very long and interesting history. In the 1570s, Captain Juan de Salcedo explored the area. It was once called Kalilayan. Later, Spanish priests founded a town called Tayabas. Lucena began as just one small part of Tayabas. It was once called Oroquieta, but people built forts for safety.

These forts were built to stop pirates from the sea. Eventually, the name Lucena was chosen in 1879. This was to honor a Spanish priest named Father Mariano Granja.

The city has seen many big changes over the years. During the Philippine-American War, Lucena was a strategic spot. Later, during World War II, Japanese forces captured the city.

Local fighters called the Hunters ROTC fought back bravely. They used their knowledge of the land to help. By January 1945, the Filipino forces pushed the Japanese out. After the war, the city began to rebuild everything. In 1961, Lucena officially became a city.

Many coconut lands surround the city. Local mills turn coconuts into oil for soap and cooking. Large factories also make things like soda and snacks. Many people in the city speak a special kind of Tagalog. They call it Lucenahin speech. This way of speaking uses older words that are different from Manila.

It is a unique part of their culture.
