Many people recognize the famous image of the word LOVE.

LOVE (1967)
LOVE (1967)

It was created by an American artist named Robert Indiana. The image uses bold letters that are stacked in two rows. The letters L and O sit above the letters V and E. One special detail is that the letter O is tilted at a 45-degree angle. This art is part of a style called pop art. People find it interesting because it is easy to see but also has deep meanings. It can feel personal, religious, or even political to different people.

Indiana used a specific way to build this image. He started with poems in 1958 that stacked the letters. Later, he made paintings and prints of the word. He even made large sculptures that people can walk around. For his first sculpture in 1966, he worked with Marian Goodman to use aluminum. In 1970, he made a much larger version using Cor-Ten steel.

This metal allowed him to make a monumental piece of art. He also made a version in the Hebrew language using the word Ahava.

The story of this art began in the early 1960s. Indiana first made the image as a small card in 1964. He sent these cards to his friends in the art world. In 1965, the Museum of Modern Art asked him for a Christmas card design. He showed them several oil paintings on canvas. The museum chose the one with red, blue, and green colors.

This became one of the most popular cards the museum ever sold.

There are many important facts about the colors and sizes of the work. Indiana used red, blue, and green for his famous painting. He said the red and green reminded him of a gas station sign. The blue reminded him of the sky in Indiana. He was also influenced by an artist named Ellsworth Kelly.

In 1973, the United States Postal Service used the image for a stamp. They printed 425 million of these eight-cent stamps for Valentine's Day. This made the image very famous all over the country.

You might see this art in many different places today. Some versions are in museums like the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Others are in public places like Love Park in Philadelphia. Even the internet has used it. In 2011, Google changed its logo to look like Indiana's art for Valentine's Day. Whether it is a tiny stamp or a huge steel sculpture, the word LOVE remains a very strong symbol.
