These terms describe a leader who uses clever plans to win battles. He is remembered as one of France's greatest generals. His life involved great military triumphs and intense political conflicts.

Condé received a very thorough education from a young age. He studied history, law, and mathematics at a Jesuit school in Bourges. Later, he attended the Royal Academy in Paris.

His high status allowed him to hold great power early on. At seventeen, he governed the region of Burgundy while his father was away. He also joined the army in 1640. His father arranged a marriage for him to Claire-Clémence de Maillé-Brézé.

This marriage was unhappy for him and lasted many years.

His military fame began during the Thirty Years' War. In 1643, he was appointed to command against Spanish forces in northern France. He faced the Spanish tercios, which were considered the toughest soldiers in Europe.

At the Battle of Rocroi, Condé conceived and directed a decisive victory. This win brought him great fame and success. He later led reinforcements into Germany to assist the commander Turenne. In 1645, he fought at the Battle of Nördlingen and received several serious wounds. He also captured the fortress of Philippsburg and the city of Dunkirk.

As Condé grew more powerful, he became a threat to the French government. His wealth and noble status worried Anne of Austria and her minister, Mazarin. This tension led to a period of civil unrest known as the Fronde.

Condé initially helped the crown by subduing the Parlement of Paris in 1649. However, he soon led his own rebellion called the Fronde des nobles. He was arrested and imprisoned at Vincennes in 1650. After his release, he fought against the royal forces. He was eventually defeated by Turenne at the Battle of the Faubourg St Antoine in 1652.

Following his defeat, Condé made the choice to defect to Spain. He commanded Spanish forces during the final stages of the Franco-Spanish War.
