The Battle of Rocroi took place on May 19, 1643. It was a major conflict during the Thirty Years' War. This war had been raging in Germany since 1618. France entered the war in 1635 to support Protestant states against the Habsburgs. The battle was fought between the French army and Spanish forces in northern France. It occurred just five days after the death of King Louis XIII. This left the four-year-old Louis XIV as the new king of France.

The battle was a turning point for European military power. For 120 years, the Spanish tercios had dominated battlefields. A tercio was a large infantry unit using pikes and guns. These units were considered invincible by many people. The defeat at Rocroi shattered this myth of invincibility. This event marked the end of Spanish military greatness. It also signaled the beginning of French hegemony, or leadership, in Europe. Over time, Spain began to adopt the line infantry doctrine used by the French.

The Spanish army was led by General Francisco de Melo. They moved through the Ardennes with 27,000 men. Their goal was to relieve pressure on Spanish territories in Catalonia and Franche-Comté. The Spanish forces laid siege to the fortified town of Rocroi. The French army was led by the 21-year-old Duke of Enghien. He commanded about 23,000 soldiers near Amiens. Enghien was known for being a bold and cunning commander. He was supported by subordinates like Marshal Jean de Gassion.

Enghien faced a difficult decision before the fight. He learned that 6,000 Spanish reinforcements were approaching Rocroi. Against the advice of his older commanders, he decided to attack immediately. He moved his army through a narrow defile between woods and marshes. The Spanish army formed up between the French and the town. The Spanish expected a decisive victory to force a peace treaty. The French arranged their army with two infantry lines and cavalry on the wings.

The battle began on the morning of May 19 on open farmland. The French cavalry attacked the Spanish left flank first. Jean de Gassion led a successful charge on the Spanish right. However, the French left wing was repulsed by a Spanish counter-attack. The battle became inconclusive as both sides suffered heavy losses. Enghien saw that his center was under extreme pressure. Instead of retreating, he chose a risky maneuver to gain momentum.

Enghien ordered a cavalry encirclement to trap the Spanish. His troops swept around the lines to get behind the Spanish position. This move successfully smashed through the rear of the Spanish infantry. The Spanish cavalry was scattered, leaving the infantry isolated. The Spanish infantry remained in their squares and fought bravely. They even repulsed two separate French cavalry attacks. Enghien massed his artillery to hammer the Spanish squares.

The fighting was very intense and resulted in many casualties. The French lost about 4,000 men. The Spanish losses were much higher. General Melo reported 6,000 casualties and 4,000 prisoners to Madrid. Estimates for Spanish deaths range from 4,000 to 8,000 men. Most of these losses were among the Spanish infantry. Of the 7,000 Spanish infantry, only about 1,776 were able to escape back to the Spanish Netherlands. The Spanish cavalry and artillerymen were mostly able to withdraw.

The aftermath of the battle changed European politics. The victory established the reputation of the Duke of Enghien. He later earned the name "the Great Condé." The battle proved that France remained a strong power despite its child king. In the following decades, military leadership in Europe shifted from Spain to France. This shift was part of a larger movement toward French absolute monarchy. The battle at Rocroi remains a famous example of how a single engagement can change history.
