France joined the fight in 1635 to help Protestant states. The battle was fought between the French army and the Spanish forces. It happened just five days after the young Louis XIV became the king of France. This battle changed how people thought about power in Europe. It showed that the strongest lands could change over time.

To understand the battle, we must look at how the armies were set up. The Spanish used a special way of fighting called the tercio. These were large squares of infantry soldiers using pikes and guns.

First, the French cavalry attacked the left side of the Spanish army. Jean de Gassion led the French horsemen on the right. Enghien led a charge against the Spanish left flank. At the same time, some French horsemen on the left were pushed back by the Spanish. The battle was very intense and both sides were struggling. Enghien saw that his center was in trouble. He decided to use a very clever move to win.

Enghien ordered his cavalry to circle around the entire Spanish line. This move allowed them to get behind the Spanish soldiers.

The French smashed through the back of the Spanish infantry. The Spanish infantry fought very bravely and stayed in their squares. Even with heavy fire from French cannons, they did not break easily. However, the Spanish were eventually surrounded on all sides. The Spanish infantry was the main group that suffered during the fight. Many soldiers were killed or taken as prisoners.

This battle had a huge impact on the world. It ended the idea that the Spanish tercios could never be beaten. For 120 years, these units had ruled the battlefields of Europe. After Rocroi, France began to become the most powerful land in Europe. The young Duke of Enghien became very famous for his victory. People started calling him the Great Condé. The battle also showed that France was still strong even with a very young king. It was a major turning point for many countries.
