Lonnie Donegan was a famous British singer and songwriter. Many people called him the "King of Skiffle."

He was a very important figure in music history. His style helped change British pop and rock music forever. Donegan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 29, 1931. His father, Peter John Donegan, was a professional violinist. The family later moved to East Ham in Essex. Donegan grew up listening to swing jazz and vocal acts. He bought his very first guitar in 1945 when he was 14 years old.

Skiffle is a special kind of music that uses simple tools. This style was perfect for people who did not have much money for expensive instruments. Donegan used an acoustic guitar and a banjo to play his songs. He also used a washboard to keep the rhythm. Another common instrument was the tea-chest bass, which is a large bass made from a tea chest.

In 1954, he recorded a very fast version of the song "Rock Island Line." This song used a washboard to create a great beat. It became a huge hit in the United Kingdom. It was even the first debut record to go gold in the UK.

Donegan's career began with traditional jazz music. He played in a band called Ken Colyer's Jazzmen in the early 1950s. He even played the banjo for them, even though he had never played it before! He learned many songs by listening to the BBC radio. In 1952, he formed the Tony Donegan Jazzband. He chose the name "Lonnie" as a tribute to the blues musician Lonnie Johnson.

Later, he signed with the Pye record label in 1955. He became a star on television in the United States too. He appeared on shows like the Perry Como Show.

Donegan had a very successful time on the music charts. He had 31 top-30 hit singles in the United Kingdom. Out of those, 24 were successive hits. Three of his songs actually reached number one!

One of his biggest hits in the US was "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour (On the Bedpost Overnight?)". He was also the first British male singer to have two top-10 hits in the US. For his hard work, he was given an MBE in the year 2000. He also received an Ivor Novello lifetime achievement award in 1995.

His music inspired many other famous musicians. The skiffle style encouraged many young people to start their own bands. For example, John Lennon formed a group called the Quarrymen in 1957. This group later became the famous Beatles. Even the Beatles used his music for inspiration. Many other artists, like Mark Knopfler, have said he was a great influence. Donegan's life was also shared through stories and even a musical called "Lonnie D."

He passed away on November 3, 2002, at the age of 71. His music continues to be remembered by people all over the world.
