Lois Weber was a pioneer in the early days of cinema.

She worked during the silent film era when movies had no recorded speech. Weber was much more than just a director. She was a screenwriter, a producer, and an actress too. Many historians call her a true "auteur." This means she was a filmmaker who controlled almost every part of a movie. She used her films to share her own ideas and philosophies. She often focused on social justice and the needs of humanity.

Weber was known for trying new ways to tell stories. In her 1913 film *Suspense*, she used a split screen. This technique allowed the audience to see two different actions at the same time. She also worked with her first husband, Phillips Smalley. Together, they experimented with sound in 1913. This made them some of the first people to make sound films in the United States.

Before she entered the film world, Weber was a gifted musician. She was a child prodigy and an excellent pianist. Her most loved possession was a baby grand piano.

She even toured the country as a concert pianist. However, a single accident changed her career path. During a recital, a black piano key broke off in her hand. This incident broke her nerve for public playing. She decided to retire from the concert stage and move into movies instead.

Weber's career was incredibly busy and successful. Some sources say she made between 200 and 400 films. Her husband, Phillips Smalley, said they collaborated on 350 films together.

Lois Weber helped shape the way we watch movies today. She discovered and mentored many famous women actors. These stars included Mary MacLaren and Anita Stewart.
