Little Ice Age

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Little Ice Age was a time of regional cooling. It was not a true ice age that covered the whole planet. Instead, certain areas felt much colder for a long time. This cooling was most noticeable in the North Atlantic region.

Modern data shows this period was different from our recent global warming. Scientists say these changes were small compared to the warming we see today. It was a real event, but it did not change the whole world at once.

Many things might have caused this cooling to happen. Some experts suggest it was due to cyclical lows in solar radiation. This means the sun gave off less energy for a while. Other ideas include more volcanic activity or changes in how oceans move. Changes in Earth's orbit or tilt could also play a part. Even changes in the human population might have had an effect.

Scientists are still studying how all these pieces fit together.

Finding exactly when this period started is a hard job. There is no single consensus among experts. Some say it began around 1300 when warm summers became less dependable. Others point to 1250 when Atlantic pack ice began to grow. A massive eruption of the Samalas volcano in 1257 might have helped start it.

The period is often defined as lasting from the 16th to the 19th centuries. However, some researchers prefer a longer span from 1300 to 1850.

Life changed in many ways during these cold years. In Central Europe, winters were often much colder than average. In the 17th century, temperatures were 1.2°C below the normal average.

Glaciers in the Swiss Alps grew and even destroyed some villages. In Great Britain, rivers and canals froze deep enough for ice skating. People even held frost fairs on the River Thames.

Merchants even used iceboats with runners to travel on frozen water.

In other places, the cold changed how people lived and ate. In Greenland, the weather became very cold and stormy around 1250. This made farming very difficult for the Norse settlers. They had to change their diet to hunt more seals.

In Iceland, sea ice grew for miles and closed up harbors. This made it very hard for ships to move around. The cold period eventually ended as the world began to warm up again.
