Milankovitch cycles

Earth moves through space in ways that change our climate. These changes happen over many thousands of years. This phenomenon is called Milankovitch cycles. It is named after Milutin Milanković. He was a Serbian geophysicist and astronomer. In the 1920s, he studied these patterns. He showed how different movements combine to change solar radiation. Solar radiation is the sunlight that reaches our planet.

Three main movements change how much sunlight we receive. The first is eccentricity, which is the shape of our orbit. Sometimes our orbit is a near circle. Other times it is more of an oval, or ellipse. The second is obliquity, which is the tilt of Earth's axis. This tilt changes between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees. A larger tilt makes the seasons more extreme. The third is axial precession, a slow wobble of our axis.

These movements happen because of gravity from other planets. The pull of Jupiter and Saturn changes our orbital shape. This orbital eccentricity changes over long periods. One major cycle happens every 405,000 years. There are also cycles of 95,000 and 124,000 years. The tilt of the Earth changes on a 41,000-year cycle. Our current tilt is 23.446 degrees. It is actually decreasing right now.

These cycles change where and when sunlight hits Earth. For example, precession changes our position relative to the stars. It also changes when we are closest to the Sun. This closest point is called perihelion. The furthest point is called aphelion. Currently, perihelion happens around January 3. This means the northern hemisphere has shorter winters. In the southern hemisphere, the seasons are different.

Understanding these cycles helps us see how the Earth changes. Land masses heat up faster than the deep oceans. This is because oceans have a large thermal inertia. This means they take a long time to change temperature. These cycles can lead to ice ages or warmer times. We can see these changes in old ice cores. These cores act like a history book for our planet.
