He was a mathematician, an astronomer, and a geophysicist. He also worked as a civil engineer and a university professor. Milanković is famous for two very big scientific ideas. The first was his "Canon of the Earth's Insolation." This work describes the climates of all the planets in our solar system. His second big idea explains how Earth's climate changes over long periods. These shifts are known today as Milankovitch cycles.

His work on climate cycles explains how the Earth's position changes. These cycles happen because of how Earth moves compared to the Sun. This movement changes how much heat and light the planet receives. These changes can cause ice ages to happen over a long time. They also help scientists understand climate changes that might happen in the future. Milanković used math to connect the movement of stars to Earth science. This helped turn descriptive science into an exact science.
