He was born in Fuzhou around the year 1785. His family worked very hard to help him study for important government exams. Lin started learning the classics when he was only three years old. He was an unusually brilliant student from a very young age. By the time he was 26, he passed the highest level of exams. This allowed him to join the Hanlin Academy. He spent many years working to help the people in his country. He fixed broken dams and helped manage floods. He also worked to stop pirates from causing trouble.

Lin became very well known for being an honest official. People even gave him the nickname "Lin Clear-as-the-Heavens." This was because he refused to take bribes or act unfairly. He felt a deep need to help people who were suffering. He often felt great sadness when he saw people in distress. Later in his career, he became the Governor-General of Hunan and Hubei. In this role, he saw that the opium drug trade was causing big problems. He wanted to stop the trade to protect the people. At first, he thought about growing poppies in China to save money. However, he soon decided that the best way was to stop the trade entirely.

In 1839, Lin went to Canton to take action against the drugs.

He wrote an open letter to the ruler of England. He argued that China sent useful things like tea and silk to Britain. He said Britain was sending back only "poison" in return. He believed the drug trade was wrong and lacked morality. Lin also hoped the British ruler would stop the trade. He thought the trade was illegal in England too. His letter did not get a response from the British. However, it was later printed in the London Times newspaper. This helped the British public see his message.

Lin took very strong steps to destroy the opium in Canton. He arrested over 1,700 Chinese dealers of the drug. He also took away more than 70,000 opium pipes. Eventually, foreign merchants gave up nearly 1.2 million kg of opium. On June 3, 1839, a large group of workers began to destroy it. About 500 workers labored for 23 days to finish the job. They mixed the opium with salt and lime. Then, they threw it into the sea near Humen Town. This action helped start the First Opium War between China and Britain. The war was difficult because the British had a strong naval fleet.

After the war, the Emperor sent Lin to a far place called Xinjiang. This was a form of punishment for the troubles that happened. While he was there, Lin learned many interesting things about new cultures. He was the first Chinese scholar to write about Muslim culture in that area. He even recorded old stories about spirits and local traditions. Later, the government changed its mind and gave him new jobs. He served as a Governor-General in other provinces until he died in 1850. Today, many people in China view him as a hero. He is a symbol of standing up against drug abuse. People still honor his memory in many different ways.
