Britain wanted to sell a drug called opium to China. This trade was very profitable for British merchants. However, the Chinese government wanted to stop the sale of opium. They saw it as a problem for their people. This disagreement led to years of tension between the two nations.

Trade between Europe and China had been happening for a long time.

China sold beautiful goods like tea, silk, and porcelain. Most of these items were sold in the city of Guangzhou. European traders had to follow strict rules called the Canton System. They could only trade through a special group of Chinese merchants. These merchants were known as the Cohong. For many years, China received huge amounts of silver in exchange for its goods.
