Leonard Bosack

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Leonard Bosack is a man who helped change how computers talk to one another. He is a co-founder of Cisco Systems, a very large American company. This company makes technology for networking and communication. Bosack is famous for helping to bring local area network technology to the world. This is often called LAN technology. A LAN connects computers that are close to each other. His work helped the whole computer industry change in big ways.

To make this happen, Bosack worked on a device called a router. A router is a tool that lets different computers share data. At Stanford University, he helped a project connect many different types of machines. These machines included mainframes, minis, and LISP machines. The router allowed data to move between different school departments. This was a very hard job because the computers were not compatible. He helped link 5,000 computers across the Stanford campus. This helped create a true LAN system.

Bosack began his journey in Pennsylvania after being born in 1952. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. Later, he went to Stanford University to study computer science. In 1984, he and Sandy Lerner started Cisco in Menlo Park. They named the company after the nearby city of San Francisco. They even built their first routers in their own house. They used Stanford's network to test their new ideas.

Cisco became a massive success very quickly. In its first month, the company had contracts worth over $200,000. By 1996, Cisco's revenues reached $5.4 billion. In 1998, the company was worth more than $6 billion. Bosack and Lerner left the company in 1990. They walked away with $170 million after being forced out. In 2009, the IEEE Computer Society gave Bosack an award. This award was for his work as a computer entrepreneur.

Bosack continues to work on new ways to move data. He works with optical networks, which use light to send information. He created systems for fiber optic cables. These cables can send data over very long distances. He made a system that works over 1,231 kilometers. That is about the distance from Chicago to New York City. He also uses his wealth for charity. He helps fund science projects and animal welfare through a foundation.
