When Larry was six, his father brought home a computer. Larry soon learned how to use it for schoolwork. He also loved to take things apart to see how they worked. He even studied music and played the flute and saxophone. He said that music taught him to care about speed. This helped him want computers to work very fast.

While studying at Stanford University, Page began a big project. He wanted to understand how the World Wide Web worked. He thought about the web as a huge web of links. He worked with a fellow student named Sergey Brin. They called their early project BackRub.

They wanted to find a way to rank web pages. They created a special tool called the PageRank algorithm. This algorithm looks at how many links go to a page. If many pages link to one site, that site is likely important. This made searching the internet much better for everyone.

In 1998, Page and Brin officially started the company Google, Inc. They used the name "Googol" for the company. This name comes from a huge number with one hundred zeros.

They did not have a big office at first. Instead, they worked out of a garage in Menlo Park. They even used spare parts from old computers to build their system. They used a small loan from friends and family to help them grow. By mid-1998, they saw that people were using their tool every day. They realized their project was becoming something very real.

Google changed how people find information every single day. Some people compare Google to Johannes Gutenberg. Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1440. That invention helped spread knowledge to many people.

Google does a similar job for the digital world. It makes the world's information easy for everyone to use. Page and Brin wanted to organize information so it is useful. Their work helped turn the internet into a library for the whole world. This changed how we learn and discover new things.
