Ethernet is a family of technologies used to connect computers.

These connections happen through wires in many types of networks. Some networks are small, called local area networks or LANs. Others are much larger, like metropolitan or wide area networks. Ethernet is a key part of how the Internet works. It helps carry the data traffic we use every day.

Because it is an open standard, many different companies can use it.

To send information, Ethernet uses a specific way of working. A computer takes a stream of data and breaks it into small pieces. These pieces are called frames. Each frame has a source address and a destination address. This tells the data exactly where to go. Frames also include error-checking data. This helps the system find and discard any damaged pieces.

The idea for Ethernet grew from an older system called ALOHAnet. Norman Abramson designed ALOHAnet in the late 1960s for the University of Hawaii. In 1972, Robert Metcalfe and David Boggs adapted this idea. They worked at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, also known as Xerox PARC. They used a shared coaxial cable to connect ALTO computers. Their first successful run was on May 22, 1973.

Metcalfe named the concept "Ethernet" in a memo written at that time.

Ethernet has changed a lot since its early days. The first version, 10BASE5, used a very thick cable. Later, 10BASE2 used a thinner and more flexible cable.

Modern systems often use twisted pair or fiber optic links. In 1980, the DIX standard was published to help companies work together. This was a group including Digital Equipment Corporation, Intel, and Xerox. By 1983, the IEEE 802.3 standard was officially published.

This helped Ethernet become a global standard.

You can see Ethernet working in many places today. It is used in homes and in large industries. It works very well with wireless Wi-Fi technologies.

While Wi-Fi is wireless, Ethernet provides a steady wired path. Ethernet speeds have grown from the original rates to very fast speeds. These include Gigabit Ethernet and even Terabit Ethernet.
