A network switch is a smart piece of hardware used to connect devices on a computer network.

It acts like a traffic controller for digital information. When devices like computers or printers need to talk, they send data in small pieces called packets. The switch receives these packets and makes sure they reach the right place. This helps keep the network efficient and secure. Without switches, it would be much harder for many devices to share information quickly.

To work, the switch follows a very specific way of moving data. Every device on a network has a unique identifier called a MAC address. The switch learns these addresses as devices connect to its ports. It stores this information in a special table, sometimes called a CAM table. When a packet arrives, the switch looks at the destination address in the packet header. Instead of sending the data to everyone, it only forwards it to the specific port where that device is plugged in.

This method is much better than an old tool called a hub, which sends data to every port and creates a mess of traffic.

The history of this technology began in the early 1980s. An engineer named Mark Kempf invented the first MAC bridge in 1983. He worked for a company called Digital Equipment Corporation, or DEC. Shortly after, DEC released a product called the LANBridge 100. Later, the company made other switches like the GigaSwitch. DEC even shared its patents so other companies could help make the technology a standard. This allowed companies like Kalpana to start making their own multi-port switches too.

Switches come in many different shapes and sizes for different jobs. You might see a small desktop unit in a home or a small office.

For big businesses, there are large rack-mounted switches that fit into metal frames. Some switches are even modular, meaning you can add extra parts to them. These large switches might have many ports, such as a 36-port model. Some advanced switches can even provide electricity through the data cable. This is called Power over Ethernet, or PoE. It allows things like office phones to work without needing a separate power plug.

You can think of a network switch as a high-tech mail sorting center. In a regular post office, a worker looks at the address on an envelope. They do not give that letter to every single house in the city. Instead, they send it directly to the one house it belongs to. A switch does the exact same thing with digital data packets. It keeps the "roads" of the network clear so information does not crash into other information. This makes sure your internet and local connections stay fast and reliable.
