technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Leonard Bosack is a man who changed how computers talk. He helped start a big company called Cisco Systems. He and his partner, Sandy Lerner, started it in 1984. They named the company after the city of San Francisco.

At Stanford University, Leonard worked on a special tool. This tool was a router. A router is a device that helps computers share data. Before this, many computers could not talk to each other. Leonard helped link 5,000 computers across the school campus. This helped create a local area network, or LAN. A LAN is a way to connect computers in one area.

Cisco became a very big success. In 1996, the company made billions of dollars. Leonard also worked on fiber optic networks. These use light to send data very fast. He made systems that send data over long distances. He wanted to use less power and less space.

Today, Leonard uses his money to help others. He and Sandy have a foundation for charity. They give money to science and animal projects. They even help a center for women writers.
