A legislature is a special group of people who make laws.

These groups have the legal power to decide rules for a city or a whole nation. They are one of the most important parts of a government. Legislatures work alongside other groups, like the executive and the judicial branches. They can exist at many levels of power. Some work for a single city or a small region. Others work for a whole country or even a group of countries like the European Parliament.

Legislators have several big jobs to do every day. First, they represent the people who live in their area. They also spend time talking and debating important ideas. This is called deliberation. Another huge job is making the actual laws. Legislatures also have the "power of the purse." This means they decide how the government can spend its money. Finally, they provide oversight. This helps them watch over the leaders to make sure they follow the rules.

History shows that people have used legislatures for a very long time. One of the earliest known groups was the Athenian Ecclesia in ancient Greece. In the Middle Ages, kings in Europe held meetings with noble people. These meetings were often called the Estates. There is even one very old legislature still around today. It is called the Althing in Iceland, and it was started in 930 CE.

Different countries use different names and styles for their legislatures. In a parliamentary system, like in the United Kingdom, the leaders are often chosen from within the group.

In a congress system, like in the United States, the legislature is kept separate from the leader. The president and the congress are even chosen in different elections. Some countries have one group of lawmakers, which is called unicameral. Other countries have two groups, which is called bicameral. Some even have more than two groups!

Many different words can describe these important groups. You might hear them called an Assembly, a Council, or a Diet. In different languages, they have unique names too. For example, the German group is called the Bundestag. In Russia, a council is called a Soviet. In Israel, the meeting is called the Knesset. Even though the names change, the goal is the same. They all work to choose people who represent citizens and make laws for the land.
