It was created by Magnús Scheving, a champion of aerobics. The series uses a unique blend of live-action actors, puppets, and computer animation. This combination made it one of the most expensive children's shows ever produced. The cost per episode was over five times the average for a children's program. This high budget allowed for high-quality visual effects and detailed digital environments. The show has reached a massive global audience.

The series follows the inhabitants of a town called LazyTown. Most residents are inactive and lack motivation. The hero, Sportacus, lives in a futuristic airship above the town. He is a male protagonist dedicated to exercise and healthy eating. Sportacus is powered by fruits and vegetables, which he calls "sports candy." If he eats junk food, he loses his powers. He must eat healthy food to restore his strength. He is assisted by Stephanie, an energetic and kind eight-year-old girl. Stephanie is an aspiring dancer who encourages her friends to be active.

Opposing the heroes is the villainous Robbie Rotten. He is the main antagonist who devises schemes to keep the citizens lazy. Robbie Rotten despises Sportacus and tries to get rid of him. Ironically, his many complex schemes require him to be physically active. Most of his plans end in failure. The show also features several puppet characters that represent specific negative traits. Ziggy is a six-year-old boy with an unbalanced diet of sweets. Pixel is a nine-year-old boy who is reclusive and addicted to technology. Stingy is a seven-year-old boy who is selfish and possessive. Trixie is an eight-year-old girl who lacks respect for rules.

The history of LazyTown began with books written by Scheving. He published Áfram Latibær! in 1995 and another book in 1996. He also created stage plays based on these stories in Iceland. The character Robbie Rotten was introduced in the 1997 book, Latibær í Vandræðum. A second stage show debuted in 1999 and featured Stefán Karl Stefánsson as Robbie Rotten. By 2003, Nickelodeon commissioned the television series following a successful test pilot. The production of the first two seasons occurred between 2004 and 2007. These seasons contained fifty-two episodes.

The production process involved advanced technology to create its colorful world. Much of the show was filmed at 380 Studios near Reykjavík, Iceland. This facility featured one of the largest green screens in the world. The production floor covered 1,800 square meters. The creators used a framework called XRGen4, which was based on Unreal Engine 3. This technology allowed the digital sets to move in real time with the actors. As the camera moved, the virtual backdrop synchronized with the physical movement. This created a seamless blend of real and digital elements.

LazyTown has a significant presence in international media history. It was originally produced in English and dubbed into thirty different languages. The show was broadcast in over 180 countries. In the United States, it aired on Nickelodeon, CBS, and PBS Kids Sprout. Turner Broadcasting System Europe acquired LazyTown Entertainment in 2011. This acquisition led to the production of the third and fourth seasons. These seasons consisted of twenty-six episodes and premiered in 2013. In total, the series consists of seventy-eight episodes across four seasons.

The show's impact extends to various media and spin-offs. There were stage productions and a short-form series called LazyTown Extra for younger children. The series also featured a predominantly Eurodance soundtrack. Every episode includes at least one original song. Most episodes conclude with a performance of the song "Bing Bang." Some tracks were reworked versions of songs from the original Icelandic plays. Even after its original run, the show remains a popular topic on platforms like YouTube. The creator continues to express interest in reviving the franchise to "move the world."
