It was created by Magnús Scheving, an aerobics champion. The show uses a mix of live actors, puppets, and computer animation. Its main goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles for children. It was one of the most expensive children's shows ever made. Each episode cost over five times the average amount for a show. This high budget helped make the colorful world look very special. The show has been broadcast in over 180 countries. It was even translated into thirty different languages.

The stories happen in a place called LazyTown. Most people there are very inactive and unmotivated. The hero, Sportacus, lives in a futuristic airship above the town. He stays strong by eating fruits and vegetables. He calls these healthy foods "sports candy." If he eats junk food, he loses his powers. He is helped by Stephanie, an energetic 8-year-old girl. She loves to dance and wants her friends to be active too. The characters often sing songs, including a song called "Bing Bang."

There are several puppet characters who represent different habits. Ziggy is a 6-year-old boy who loves sweets too much. Pixel is a 9-year-old boy who spends all his time on computers. Stingy is a 7-year-old boy who is very possessive of his things. Trixie is an 8-year-old girl who sometimes breaks the rules. The villain is Robbie Rotten, played by Stefán Karl Stefánsson. He tries to make everyone in town lazy. Ironically, his many schemes require him to be very active. His plans almost always end in failure.

The idea for LazyTown started long before the TV show. Magnús Scheving wrote a book called Áfram Latibær! in 1995. This was followed by another book in 1996. He also created stage plays based on these stories. The character Robbie Rotten was first introduced in a 1997 book. By 2003, Nickelodeon commissioned the television series. The first two seasons were made between 2004 and 2007. These seasons included fifty-two episodes in total. Later, Turner Broadcasting System Europe helped make more seasons in 2013.

LazyTown has stayed popular for many years. There are seventy-eight episodes across all four seasons. The show aired on many channels like Nick Jr. and PBS Kids Sprout. It even had spin-offs like LazyTown Extra for younger kids. Some parts of the show were filmed in a special studio near Reykjavík. This studio had one of the largest green screens in the world. This allowed creators to build digital worlds around the actors. Even today, many people still watch the show on YouTube.
