It includes areas in North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. The economy here is based on exporting goods to the rest of the world. These goods are often called commodities. A commodity is a raw material like a crop or a metal. Most countries in the region rely on selling these items to grow. This makes the region a very important part of the global market.

Many different things are produced in Latin America.

During the colonial era, the Spanish and Portuguese empires controlled the region. Back then, the economy was driven by silver and sugar. Many areas had precious metals or tropical climates that were perfect for sugar plantations. After these countries gained independence in the early nineteenth century, many economies actually declined. Later, in the late nineteenth century, the region began to join the world economy again. This growth happened through new railroads and more people moving to the area to work.

There are many interesting facts and numbers about the region today.

As of 2021, the population of Latin America is 656 million people. In 2019, the total gross domestic product was US$5.1 trillion. Brazil is a world leader in many different products. It is the largest producer of sugarcane, soy, and oranges.

Argentina is also a major player in farming. It is the largest producer of yerba mate in the world.

These numbers show how much the region contributes to the world.

Connecting these facts helps us see how the world works together. The global price of commodities affects how well Latin American economies grow. If the price of sugar or copper goes up, it helps the countries that sell them. Many countries are working to build better infrastructure, like roads and bridges.

Some nations are even partnering with private companies to spend more on these projects. Because the region has so many natural resources, it attracts investment from places like the United States and Europe. This keeps the region linked to the rest of the planet.
