Laplace operator

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Laplace operator is a special math tool. It is named after Pierre-Simon de Laplace. He was a French mathematician. He used this tool to study how stars and planets move.

This tool helps us understand how things change. It looks at a single point. Then it looks at the points around it. It compares the value at that point to the average value of its neighbors. This helps us see if a point is higher or lower than the area around it.

Scientists use this tool in many ways. It helps describe how heat moves through a room. It can show how waves move through water. It even helps in quantum mechanics. This is the study of very tiny things.

Computers use it too. It helps computers find edges in a digital picture. This is called edge detection. It helps a computer see the shape of an object. In math, a function that follows Laplace's rules is called a harmonic function. These functions are very smooth. They are useful for many big puzzles in science.
