Partial differential equation

math Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Math can help us describe how things change in many directions. Imagine how heat moves through a metal rod. It moves through space and changes over time. We use special math rules to study this. These rules are called partial differential equations, or PDEs for short. A PDE is an equation with an unknown function. This function can have many different variables at once.

Scientists use PDEs to understand the world. They help us study sound and heat. They also help us study how liquids move. Even big ideas like gravity use these equations. Some PDEs are very hard to solve with pen and paper. Because of this, we use computers to find the answers. These computer answers are called numerical approximations.

There are different types of PDEs. Some are called elliptic. These often describe things that are steady, like heat in a solid. Others are called parabolic, like the heat equation. Some are called hyperbolic, like waves in the ocean.

Finding the right answer is a big job. Mathematicians look for solutions that are unique. This means there is only one right answer for the problem.
