Heat equation

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Imagine you touch a hot spoon. The heat moves from the spoon to your hand. Heat always flows from hot spots to cold spots.

This movement helps things warm up or cool down. A mathematician named Joseph Fourier studied this in 1822. He wanted to model how heat spreads through an object. This idea is called the heat equation.

Heat Transfer

The equation shows how temperature changes over time. It looks at how much hotter or colder a spot is compared to its neighbors. If a spot is much hotter than the area around it, the heat will flow away quickly. This makes the hot spot cool down.

Sometimes, a heat source like a heater is turned on. This can change the temperature in a room. If you wait a long time, the temperature might stop changing. This is called a steady state. In a steady state, the heat is balanced. The temperature at each point stays the same even as heat flows through it. This helps engineers understand how tools and engines work.
