Lapis lazuli

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lapis lazuli is a beautiful, deep-blue metamorphic rock. People have prized it for its intense color since ancient times. This stone is not just one single thing. It is a rock made of several different minerals. The most important part is lazurite, which makes up about 30% to 40% of the stone. You might also see white calcite or shiny, metallic yellow pyrite inside it.

The bright blue color comes from a special way the minerals work. Inside the lazurite, there are tiny things called radical anions. These are small parts that change how the crystal looks to our eyes. Specifically, a part called a trisulfur radical anion creates that famous blue. If other parts like disulfur or tetrasulfur are present, the color might shift toward yellow or red. This happens because these parts take the place of other parts in the crystal structure.

Humans have been mining this stone for thousands of years. As early as the 7th millennium BC, people were mining it in Badakhshan, Afghanistan. The Sar-i Sang mines in that area have been worked for over 6,000 years. Lapis lazuli was very important to the Indus Valley Civilisation between 3300 and 1900 BC. In ancient Egypt, it was used for jewelry and even as eyeshadow by Cleopatra. It was also found in the famous funeral mask of Tutankhamun.

This stone has a very long history in art. During the Middle Ages, people imported it to Europe to make a blue powder. This powder is called ultramarine pigment. Famous Renaissance and Baroque artists used it for their most important paintings. For example, the artist Vermeer used it in his famous work, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Some artists even used it for the clothing of central figures, like the Virgin Mary.

Today, we still find lapis lazuli in many places around the world. While Afghanistan is a major source, it is also found in Russia and Chile. In Chile, the Inca people used it to carve beautiful jewelry. You can find smaller amounts in places like Italy, Canada, and the United States. People use the stone to make many things like beads, vases, and statues. If someone wants a similar look, they might use other stones like sodalite or dyed jasper instead.
