Jasper

Jasper is a beautiful and colorful rock made of tiny grains of quartz. It is a type of silica that is opaque, which means you cannot see through it. Most jasper is red, yellow, brown, or green, but it can also be blue.

The common red color comes from tiny bits of iron inside the stone. This rock is quite dense, with a weight between 2.5 and 2.9 grams per cubic centimeter. Because it can be polished until it is very smooth, people use it for decoration. It makes lovely items like vases, seals, and small boxes.

This stone forms through a special way it works in nature. It often begins as silica-rich sediment or volcanic ash.

Hot water moving through the ground, called hydrothermal circulation, helps the stone form. As the materials settle, patterns begin to appear. These might look like flowing lines or layers from how the ash was laid down. Sometimes, minerals move through cracks to create patterns that look like growing plants. These are called dendritic patterns. Other times, the rock breaks and is filled with new colors to create a speckled look.

People have loved jasper since the very ancient world. The name comes from the Greek word "iaspis," which means spotted or speckled stone.

In Minoan Crete, people carved jasper into seals around 1800 BC. In the Indus Valley, people used red jasper to carve shapes like a male torso.

Ancient writers even described different colors of jasper. For example, some thought a Hebrew stone called "odem" was red jasper. Others thought a stone called "tarshish" might be yellow jasper.

There are many special types of jasper found in different places. Some are named after the mountains or rivers where they live. You can find fine jasper in the Bruneau River canyon in Idaho.

There is also Biggs jasper in Oregon and jasper in Wales. Some jasper looks like it has full scenes inside it. We call these "picture jaspers" because of their unique patterns. Some patterns look like leopard skin, while others look like stripes or broken pieces. One place in Indonesia is also known for its jasper.

Jasper is part of a larger story about our Earth. It is often found in banded iron formations. These are rocks that show us when there was a little bit of oxygen in the water long ago.

This happened during big times like the Great Oxidation Event. You might also know other dark stones like basanite. Some people used a black stone called a touchstone to test if metal was pure. They would scrape the metal on the stone to see its color. This shows how many different stones can help us understand the world around us.
