Carnelian

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Carnelian is a beautiful, brownish-red mineral. It is a type of chalcedony, which is a mineral made of silica. This stone gets its color from iron oxide, which is a natural impurity. The color can change a lot depending on the stone. It might look like a pale orange. Other pieces can be an intense, almost-black color.

Some people call a similar stone sard. Sard is usually darker and harder than carnelian. However, the two names are often used to mean the same thing.

Learning how carnelian forms is quite interesting. It is part of the chalcedony family. The iron oxide inside the silica creates the red shades. The colors move along a scale from light to dark. This creates a wide range of looks for the stone. You might see a very light orange piece. You might also find a very deep reddish-brown piece.

Because the colors change so much, the boundary between carnelian and sard is often blurry.

People have used this stone for thousands of years. Red chalcedony was used for beads in Bulgaria during the Early Neolithic. In the Varna Chalcolithic necropolis, people made faceted beads. These beads had 32 facets on each side.

In Mehrgarh, people used a bow drill to make holes. The Indus Valley Civilization also made etched beads during the 3rd millennium BCE. This shows how much people valued the stone long ago.

Many different places in the world have carnelian. It is found in Yanacodo, Peru, and Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. You can also find it in Brazil, India, and Indonesia. Other locations include Iran, Russia, Germany, and the UAE.

In ancient times, the Minoans on Crete used it for art around 1800 BC. The Romans used carnelian for signet rings. They used these rings to press a seal into hot wax. The wax does not stick to the carnelian surface.

Carnelian has many interesting names and stories. The word carnelian comes from the 14th-century word cornelian. This name comes from the Latin word for the cornel cherry. The red fruit of that tree looks like the stone.
