The stone is made of several minerals. The main part is lazurite. This mineral gives the rock its bright blue color. It also contains white calcite and yellow pyrite. Pyrite looks like tiny gold spots.

People have mined this stone for a long time. Most lapis comes from Afghanistan. It was used in ancient Egypt for jewelry and amulets. Cleopatra even used powdered lapis as eyeshadow. In the past, artists used it to make a blue paint. We call this pigment ultramarine. They used it for important parts of paintings. The artist Vermeer used it in his famous painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Today, people still use the stone. They make beads, boxes, and statues. Lapis can also be used for building finishes. Some people use other stones to look like it. These include sodalite or dyed jasper.
