People love it for its flowing beauty. They also value the deep feelings it shares about life. The writing shows a mix of different beliefs like Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. It is a timeless classic that many people still study today.

This masterpiece was created during a Spring Purification Ceremony in 353 CE. A group of forty-two scholars met at the Orchid Pavilion. They sat by a winding stream in Kuaiji Prefecture. They held a fun contest using cups of wine. The cups floated on the water downstream. If a cup stopped in front of a guest, they had to write a poem.

Wang Xizhi wrote the Lantingji Xu as a preface for these poems. He used a brush made of weasel whiskers and wrote on cocoon paper. The work has 324 characters arranged in 28 columns.

History tells us many stories about this beautiful scroll. The original was written while Wang was in a state of insobriety. He actually tried to rewrite it later. However, he could not match the beauty of the first try. Much later, Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty became a huge fan. He collected about two thousand works by Wang Xizhi.

There is even a story about an official named Xiao Yi. He was tasked to get the original from a monk named Bian Cai. After the Emperor died, the original was said to be buried in a tomb in Shaanxi Province.

Because the original is lost, many copies exist today. One famous version is the Shenlong version by Feng Chengsu. He used a special tracing method called Xiang Tuo. To do this, a copyist works in a dark room. They hold the art against a window so sunlight shines through. This helps them see every tiny detail of the strokes.

Scholars also look at stone rubbings to study the writing. A rubbing is made by pressing paper and ink onto carved stone. These stone versions often last much longer than paper. They help us understand how different writing styles changed over time.

Some experts have debated if the surviving copies are truly authentic. This debate became very strong during the Qing Dynasty. Some people, like Guo Moruo, thought the writing style was too modern. They believed the Running style only became mature after the Tang dynasty. They compared the work to older Clerical script found on stones.

Other scholars disagree and use different rubbings to prove Wang's skill. They believe the writing style was already finished in his time. Whether it is a perfect original or a great reconstruction, the work remains a treasure. It connects people from the past to people living today.
